National Trust - Castle Drogo
Drewsteignton, Nr Exeter, Devon EX6 6PB
High on a hilltop above the stunning Teign Gorge in Devon, Castle Drogo is a fantastic spot to stop for a break or spend a whole day exploring with your dog. Designed by architect Sir Edwin Lutyens for businessman Julius Drewe, the castle may look like it’s been there for centuries, but it’s just over 100 years old, and proudly holds the title of England’s last castle.
Built from granite, this striking family home is a masterpiece of early 20th-century design. Inside, you’ll find beautiful interiors, stories from the past, and some of the best views in the county.

Step outside and you’ll be able to enjoy the beautifully laid-out garden, also designed by Lutyens. It’s bursting with seasonal colour, quiet corners for reflection, and open spaces for little ones to run around. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome in the grounds too, making it a great dog friendly day out in Devon.
Further into the Teign Gorge you’ll find walking routes for every energy level, from gentle riverside paths to trails with views across the Dartmoor landscape. Ancient woodlands, rich wildlife, and the sound of the River Teign make it a favourite spot for both walkers and their dogs.
