Ravenglass to Saltcoats Walk (Lake District)

Explore the best of Cumbria

The Ravenglass to Saltcoats walk is a peaceful coastal path on the west side of the Lake District National Park. It begins in the historic village of Ravenglass, follows the estuary, crosses the River Mite, and finishes at Saltcoats beach.

This walk is about 2 km (1.2 miles) round trip, so it’s a gentle choice if you want a short, dog-friendly walk in the Lake District. The path crosses a railway viaduct and follows the estuary, with wide views of the salt marsh and coast.

Begin in Ravenglass village, follow the path over the river, and continue along the coast to Saltcoats.

WALK OVERVIEW

Distance: 1.2 miles (2 km) return
Route type: Linear
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
OS Map: Explorer OL6
Terrain: Stone paths, compacted tracks, and sections of sand and pebbles near the shoreline

ROUTE DETAILS

Start your walk in Ravenglass, a small coastal village where the Esk, Mite, and Irt rivers meet the Irish Sea.

If starting from the Ravenglass village car park, walk towards the shoreline road near the public toilets. The path begins just before the bridge over the River Mite.

If you’re parking at the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway station, leave the car park and turn left along the road, passing beneath the railway bridge. The path entrance appears on the right-hand side shortly afterwards.

From here, stone paths go gently uphill past some benches until you reach the viaduct over the River Mite. The bridge gives you views of the estuary and nearby coastline.

A short slope with a 1:8 gradient leads to a narrow concrete path next to the railway line. There are a few tight turns here before the path opens up again after the bridge.

Once you cross the viaduct, the path heads to the coast, where the ground turns to a mix of sand and pebbles along the shore.

At very high tides, parts of the beach can flood, so you may need to turn back before the end of the route.

If the weather and tides are right, follow the shoreline to Saltcoats beach, which marks the end of the walk. Then return the same way to Ravenglass.

This quiet coastal walk is a great option for a dog-friendly outing in the Lake District, especially if you want to explore the less busy western coast. The salt marshes and open shoreline are also good for spotting wildlife or watching the sunset.

Please keep your dog under control near wildlife and nesting birds.
