Chyventon
Near Falmouth, South Cornwall — Sleeps 6 — Dogs welcome

Chyventon is a granite farmhouse three miles from Falmouth, refurbished throughout and set in a multi-level enclosed garden with a stream running along its edge. The name comes from the Cornish for ‘house with the spring’ — which tells you something about how long this place has been here, and how little the garden has been tamed. It sleeps six across three bedrooms, has a dual-fuel range cooker, a wood burner set into an exposed granite chimney breast, a roll-top bath and a south-facing patio with a charcoal BBQ. One dog welcome.

Falmouth is three miles away — four beaches, the National Maritime Museum, boat trips from the pier and the estuary ferries across to Flushing and St Mawes. Trebah and Glendurgan sub-tropical gardens are both six miles. The Helford Passage is seven miles south, the Roseland Peninsula around 20 miles, the Lizard Peninsula 19 miles. From Chyventon you can cover most of south Cornwall in a day trip and be back for dinner on the terrace.

Interior

The front door opens into a kitchen and dining room with limestone flooring warmed by underfloor heating. A large dual-fuel range cooker, quartz worktops and garden views. Space for the whole group around the dining table, a utility area at one end and a cloakroom off the kitchen. A door leads directly to the garden.

The sitting room has contemporary furniture set against the period bones of the building — exposed granite, wooden floors and a wood burner in the chimney breast. Adjustable lighting and enough quiet to make an evening in feel like the right decision.

Upstairs, three bedrooms each with their own character, wooden floorboards throughout and exposed stonework. The main bedroom has a super-king bed and an en-suite shower room. The second has a king-size double. The third has zip-and-link beds, flexible for couples or friends. The family bathroom has a roll-top bath and an overhead shower.

One dog welcome.

Exterior

The enclosed garden runs across several levels with views from the upper sections. A south-facing patio with a charcoal BBQ for warm evenings. A mini amphitheatre by the stream — stone seating in a natural hollow, a good place to sit and do nothing in particular. Beyond that, a wilder section of the garden with ancient tree ferns and tropical plants that the previous owners clearly encouraged and no one has tried to rein in since. The stream runs unfenced along the garden’s edge — worth knowing if you have a dog that tends toward the water.

What to know before you arrive

Falmouth has four beaches within the town, each with different seasonal rules. Sunny Cove, between Swanpool and Maenporth, is the only one open to dogs all year with no restrictions. Gyllyngvase restricts dogs from 15 May to 30 September, 10am–6pm — but before 10am in summer it’s one of the better beach walks in south Cornwall. Castle Beach, Swanpool and Maenporth all restrict dogs from 1 July to 31 August, 10am–6pm. Outside those hours, all are accessible.

The town ferry from Falmouth to Flushing takes dogs and connects to a two-hour estuary walk to Mylor Churchtown along the Fal. The ferry to St Mawes also takes dogs — from St Mawes the coast path runs out to Place and the Roseland Peninsula, which is some of the least-visited coastline in south Cornwall.

Trebah and Glendurgan, both six miles from Chyventon, are sub-tropical gardens managed by the National Trust and the Fox family respectively. Both welcome dogs on leads. Trebah runs down to its own private beach on the Helford River — open to cottage guests in season and one of the more unusual dog-friendly beaches in Cornwall.
