National Trust - Knightshayes

Knightshayes, Bolham, Tiverton, Devon, EX16 7RQ

In the rolling hills of mid Devon, Knightshayes is one of the National Trust’s most loved properties, a place where world-class gardens, history and open spaces come together to create a day out you’ll want to savour.

The gardens here are among the finest in the South West, known not just for their scale, but for the incredible diversity they hold. Rare and exotic plants flourish among lawns and woodland, with trees and cleverly curated borders that offer new colour and interest with every season. Whether you’re a gardener or just enjoy a peaceful walk, the planting here is bound to impress.

More Details

Created in large part by John and Joyce Heathcoat-Amory, two passionate horticulturists who once called Knightshayes home, the Garden in the Wood is a standout. Their visionary work earned them the prestigious RHS Victoria Medal of Honour, and it’s easy to see why as you follow winding paths through dappled shade and dramatic planting combinations.

One of the most-loved features is the restored Victorian walled garden, which blends productivity and beauty in perfect harmony. Neat rows of vegetables, herbs and fruit trees sit alongside ornamental borders, and the produce makes its way to the Stables Café, where seasonal dishes, fresh bakes and hearty lunches are served daily.

While you’re there, pop into the plant centre and shop, ideal for gifts or inspiration for your own patch at home.

Step inside the main house and you’ll discover a bold and unusual example of Gothic Revival architecture, designed by the visionary William Burges. It’s a house full of  detail and decorative flair, once loved by some members of the family and loathed by others! Today, its rich interiors, colourful ceilings and striking furniture offer a glimpse into a time of Victorian creativity and wealth.

Outside, over 300 acres of parkland and woodland offer space to walk, picnic, or spot wildlife. You might catch sight of red deer moving through the trees or Exmoor sheep grazing the meadows. With a mix of shaded trails and open views across the Exe Valley, it’s the perfect spot for a dog walk too.

Knightshayes is proudly dog friendly. Dogs on leads are welcome throughout the parkland, and there are areas of woodland and enclosed fields where they can stretch their legs off lead, ideal for a full-family day out with your dog in tow.

From trails and wide-open spaces for children to run, to gardens and one of the most unique historic homes in Devon, Knightshayes has something for everyone. Whether you’re dropping in for a few hours or staying for the day, it’s a wonderful place to soak up the fresh air, find inspiration in the planting, and enjoy a taste of the Devon countryside at its best.
