WALK OVERVIEW

Distance: 1.2 miles (2 km) return
Route type: Linear
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
OS Map: Explorer OL6
Terrain: Woodland paths, compacted tracks, and a short, steeper section near the start

ROUTE DETAILS

Begin your walk at the small car park near St Bridget’s Church in Calder Bridge.

From the parking area, head towards the church and pass through the metal gate on the left. A zig-zag path leads downhill, avoiding a short set of steps. This section is the steepest part of the route, with a short gradient of around 1:8.

The path soon becomes easier as it winds gently downhill through the woods. After you cross a small stream and a raised walkway, you’ll arrive at the banks of the River Calder, where the scenery is especially beautiful.

This part of the river is known for its striking sandstone cliffs on the opposite bank and the way the water changes, with calm pools in some spots and faster-flowing sections in others.

Watch for wildlife as you walk. The riverbanks are a great place to see dippers, wagtails, herons, and sometimes kingfishers. Anglers also come here to fish for salmon and trout.

After about 1 km, you’ll reach the edge of the historic Calder Abbey estate. The abbey ruins are on private land and can’t be entered, but you can still enjoy the view and sense of history from nearby.

Calder Abbey was founded in the 12th century and was once an important monastery in the area. Today, it’s still one of the most atmospheric historic sites in this part of Cumbria.

From this point, just follow the same riverside path back to Calder Bridge.

This peaceful countryside walk is a lovely dog-friendly option in the Lake District, especially if you want to explore the quieter western side, away from the busier central lakes.
