Buckfast Abbey
Buckfast, Buckfastleigh, Devon, TQ11 0EE
Buckfast Abbey is a peaceful, dog friendly place to visit on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, set in a quiet valley just off the A38. It’s free to enter, with open gardens, plenty of space to explore, and a welcoming atmosphere all year round.
The Abbey is home to a community of Benedictine monks who follow the rule of St Benedict, with a focus on prayer, work, and study. The site has been in use since 1018 and is still very much a working monastery today. Visitors are welcome to explore the Abbey Church, which is open daily from 7.45am to 8.20pm (until 7pm on Saturdays), and to spend time in the surrounding gardens and grounds, which are dog friendly and open from 10am to 4.30pm (from 11.30am on Sundays).
