ROUTE DETAILS
Start your walk at the lower White Moss Common car park next to the A591. Take the wide stone path away from the car park and cross the wooden footbridge, which leads you into an open meadow by the River Rothay.
This quiet part of the river is often home to wildlife such as ducks, dippers, and herons. The area is surrounded by the slopes of Nab Scar to the north and Loughrigg Fell to the south. In spring, the nearby woods are filled with bluebells.
Keep following the riverside path until you come to a picnic bench and a small paved area. Many people use this spot as their turning point and head back to the car park the same way.
If you want to go a bit farther, the path leads into Penny Rock Wood, where it winds uphill before reaching a junction near the bridge over the outflow from Grasmere.
Dogs will love the open meadow and riverside spots along this walk. As always in the Lake District, please keep your dog under control if there’s wildlife or livestock nearby.
