Mousehole: A Luxury Dog Friendly Holiday Spot in Cornwall
Exploring Mousehole’s Harbour & Streets
On the western edge of Mount’s Bay, just three miles from Penzance, lies Mousehole — a fishing village often described as one of the prettiest in Cornwall.
Known locally as Mowsul, this timeless harbour settlement is the perfect place for a luxury dog friendly holiday in Mousehole, Cornwall. With its narrow cobbled lanes, granite cottages, and sea views stretching across to St Michael’s Mount, Mousehole offers a rare mix of coastal charm and authentic Cornish character.
Mousehole’s compact harbour is at the heart of village life.
At low tide, the sand inside the harbour walls becomes a safe beach, ideal for families and dogs to enjoy a paddle. The sea wall doubles as a promenade, perfect for stretching your legs while taking in the views across the bay.
The streets leading off the harbour are a joy to explore. Independent galleries, craft shops, and welcoming cafés hide around every corner, making it easy to lose track of time as you wander. Many of these spots are dog-friendly, so you can enjoy a relaxed browse without leaving your four-legged friend behind.
Coastal Walks & History In Mousehole
By the coast
For those who love coastal walks, Mousehole is a brilliant base. The South West Coast Path runs through the village, with a stunning stretch leading west towards Lamorna Cove. This cliffside walk offers dramatic scenery and plenty of fresh sea air — exactly what you and your dog need on holiday.
Mousehole also has its own natural tidal rock pool, a unique spot for a wild swim and a great place to look out for seals that often bask in the bay. Just east of the village lies a long pebble beach heading towards Penlee Point, a quieter alternative for peaceful walks away from the crowds.
Historic Mousehole
Mousehole’s history runs deep. In the 13th century, it was one of the busiest harbours in Mount’s Bay and is said to have Cornwall’s oldest pier, dating back to 1266. Today, fishing boats still bob in the harbour, a reminder of its working past.
The village also has a strong cultural identity. It is the setting for the much-loved children’s book The Mousehole Cat, inspired by the legend of Tom Bawcock and the famous Stargazy Pie — a dish still celebrated each December.
Mousehole at Christmas
The famous Mousehole lights
One of the biggest highlights of the year is the Mousehole Christmas Lights. Started in the 1960s, the harbour and surrounding streets are now decorated with more than 7,000 bulbs, drawing visitors from far and wide. The lights switch on in mid-December and glow into January, though on 19th December they are turned off in memory of the Penlee lifeboat crew who tragically lost their lives in 1981.
Visting Mousehole with your dog
Whether you’re soaking up the atmosphere with a pint in the local pub, browsing galleries tucked down cobbled streets, or watching the sunset over Mount’s Bay with your dog at your side, Mousehole captures the essence of Cornwall.
