Polzeath: A Luxury Dog Friendly Holiday on Cornwall’s Surf Coast
A Surfers Paradise
Polzeath is one of North Cornwall’s most famous seaside villages, drawing visitors year after year with its wide sandy beach, Atlantic surf and laid-back atmosphere. It’s a place that has inspired poets, attracted holidaymakers, and become a firm favourite with families and surfers alike. If you’re planning a luxury dog friendly holiday in Polzeath, you’ll find a destination that offers more than just stunning scenery – it’s a village full of energy, coastal charm and plenty of opportunities for you and your four-legged friend to explore.
Polzeath Beach is the star of the show – a long stretch of golden sand framed by Pentire Head to the north and the Camel Estuary to the south.
At low tide, the sand seems endless, giving dogs plenty of space to run, dig and splash in the shallows. During the summer months, lifeguards patrol the beach, making it one of the safest surfing spots in Cornwall.
Do keep in mind that a seasonal dog ban is in place from mid-May to the end of September during the daytime, but outside of those hours and months, dogs can enjoy the beach just as much as their owners.
For quieter walks, the smaller Pentire Haven Beach reveals itself at low tide just beyond the main bay, offering a more peaceful setting away from the crowds.
Literary Links & Exploring the Area
Polzeath has long held a special place in the hearts of writers and artists. The Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman often visited, immortalising the area in his verse, while nearby Pentire Head was the setting where Laurence Binyon penned For the Fallen, with its famous remembrance lines. Following in their footsteps, a walk along the clifftops is both invigorating and reflective – a chance to see the coastline through the eyes of those inspired by its beauty. It’s also an excellent dog walk, with sweeping views, sea air and plenty of grassy paths for a good stretch of the legs.
Beyond the beach, Polzeath makes a fantastic base for exploring North Cornwall. Take your dog along the South West Coast Path for dramatic views and fresh Atlantic air, or cross the estuary to Rock and Daymer Bay, both known for being more relaxed and dog friendly outside the peak season. The village itself has a mix of cafés, surf shops and eateries – many of which welcome dogs – so you don’t need to worry about leaving your pup behind while you stop for coffee or lunch.
Visiting Polzeath with Your Dog
Polzeath Beach is dog friendly for much of the year, though a seasonal ban is in place from 15th May to 30th September between 10am and 6pm. Outside these hours, and during the rest of the year, dogs are welcome to enjoy the sand and surf with you. If you’re visiting during the summer months, the neighbouring Pentireglaze and Greenaway beaches are good alternatives where dogs are free to roam.
Parking is available in the large beachside car park, though it can get busy on hot days and during school holidays, so it’s worth arriving early. There are public toilets and beach cafés nearby, making it easy to spend a full day here.
The beach has RNLI lifeguard patrols from May through September, giving peace of mind if you plan to swim or try your hand at surfing. Always check tide times before setting out, as the beach changes dramatically with the tide and some connecting coves are only accessible when the water is out.
For walkers, the South West Coast Path passes through Polzeath, offering fantastic dog friendly trails towards Pentire Head and Daymer Bay, with plenty of fresh air, sea views, and chances for your dog to explore safely.
