Dog Friendly Cottages near Portreath

Portreath is a small harbour village on Cornwall’s north coast, set between high cliffs with a sandy beach at its centre and the South West Coast Path running in both directions. The beach is open to dogs for most of the year. The cliff walk west toward Hell’s Mouth is one of the better sections of the trail in mid Cornwall. The Coast to Coast Trail — linking Portreath with Devoran near Falmouth along the route of the old mining tramway — starts in the village. And Tehidy Woods, 250 acres of ancient woodland managed by Cornwall Council, is a short drive inland.

West Pine, our cottage in nearby Tehidy, sleeps six in a single-storey property with vaulted ceilings, a hot tub and a fully enclosed garden. Portreath beach is 10 minutes by car.

Four walks worth planning around

South West Coast Path west — toward Hell’s Mouth
5 miles return | 2.5 hours | Moderate, cliff-edge sections

Head west from Portreath along the coast path past North Cliffs toward Hell’s Mouth — a dramatic sea inlet where the cliff drops vertically into churning water. One of the more striking sections of the north Cornwall trail, with wildflowers on the cliff edge in summer and a reasonable chance of spotting grey seals on the rocks below. Dogs on leads throughout — the slate cliff edges are prone to erosion. The route passes Gooden Heane Point and Ralph’s Cupboard, a collapsed sea cave, before reaching Hell’s Mouth.

South West Coast Path east — toward Hayle and Godrevy
Variable distance | Easy to moderate

Head east from the village along the coast path toward Tehidy and Godrevy Head. The National Trust land at Godrevy is open to dogs all year and the lighthouse — the one Virginia Woolf had in mind for To the Lighthouse — is visible from the headland. A longer day walk continuing around the bay to Hayle is possible on foot.

The Coast to Coast Trail — toward Devoran
11 miles one way | 4–5 hours | Easy, largely flat

The trail follows the route of the old mineral tramway that carried copper ore from Portreath harbour to Devoran near Falmouth — one of the earliest railways in Cornwall. The full route is 11 miles and largely flat, passing through Cambrose, Three Burrows and St Day. Dogs off-lead for most of the route. The return is by taxi or pre-arranged transport — worth planning before you set off.

Tehidy Woods
Variable distance | Easy throughout

The country park covers around 250 acres of ancient woodland with lake paths, open glades and waymarked trails. Around 10 minutes from Portreath by car. Dogs welcome throughout, on leads in some sections. The café at the main car park welcomes dogs outside.

What's open and when

Portreath Beach — restricted 1 July to 31 August, 10am–6pm

A wide sandy beach in a sheltered cove, with a narrow harbour wall to one side and high cliffs on both. Outside the July and August restriction hours, dogs are welcome throughout. Before 10am and after 6pm during those months, the beach is also open — a good reason to plan an early morning walk and be back at the cottage before the crowds arrive. Facilities in the village include a car park beside the beach, a café and a pub. Lifeguards are on duty from mid-May to late September.

Porthtowan — dogs all year, no restrictions

Three miles south along the coast road. A wider, more exposed beach with consistent surf and no seasonal dog restrictions at any time. The Blue Bar at Porthtowan welcomes dogs on the terrace and is one of the better-known beach cafés on the north coast.

Gwithian and Hayle — dogs all year

Six miles south-west. The Gwithian section of St Ives Bay beach has no dog restrictions. At low tide the sand runs for three miles toward the Hayle estuary. The Times named Hayle beach the best in the UK in 2024.
