CORNISH HOLIDAYS

Dog Friendly Cottages in Mawgan Porth

Mawgan Porth is a small village set in a valley on the north Cornish coast, four miles north of Newquay and twenty minutes south of Padstow. The beach is wide, west-facing and open to dogs all year with no restrictions at all. The South West Coast Path runs directly through the village in both directions. There is one pub, one cafe and a village store — which tells you everything you need to know about the pace of the place.

Karn Havos is our featured cottage in Mawgan Porth. It sits above the Bedruthan Steps sea stacks with Atlantic views from the living room, the sun terrace and the master bedroom. It sleeps six with a hot tub and an inverted layout that puts the best views on the top floor.

Dog Freindly Walks

Three walks from Mawgan Porth

South West Coast Path north — toward Bedruthan Steps and Carnewas
1.5 miles one way | 45 minutes | Moderate, cliff-edge sections

Head north from the beach on the coast path toward the clifftop at Carnewas above the Bedruthan Steps sea stacks. The National Trust has a cafe at the clifftop — dogs welcome outside. The view down to the sea stacks is the reason to go: columns of slate rising from the sand, visible from above in a way that no photograph quite captures. Note that the steps down to Bedruthan Steps beach itself are currently closed following a cliff fall and the National Trust has confirmed the closure is ongoing — the view from the top is the accessible part. Dogs on leads near the cliff edge throughout.

South West Coast Path south — toward Watergate Bay via Beacon Cove
3.5 miles one way | 1.5-2 hours | Moderate

Head south from Mawgan Porth along the coast path past Beacon Cove toward Watergate Bay. A quieter section of the trail than the stretches further north or south. Beacon Cove is a small, rocky cove accessible at low tide — worth stopping at if the tide is right. Watergate Bay is at the far end, open to dogs all year, with the Beach Hut cafe welcoming dogs. The 11A bus runs back to Mawgan Porth if you want a one-way walk.

The Mawgan Valley inland walk
2.5 miles | 1 hour | Easy

Follow the River Menalhyl inland through the valley toward the village of St Mawgan. The path runs through farmland and mixed woodland — largely flat, largely quiet. St Mawgan has the Falcon Inn, a 16th-century pub that welcomes dogs, about a mile from Mawgan Porth on foot. A good option on days when the coastal path feels exposed.

What's open and when

Mawgan Porth Beach
Dogs all year, no restrictions

The beach sits at the mouth of the valley, sheltered by headlands on both sides and fed by a stream running down from the valley floor. At low tide the sand opens into a wide, flat expanse — good for running, good for swimming and calm enough for dogs who prefer paddling to surf. Blue Flag status for water quality. The stream crossing at the southern end is shallow enough for dogs to wade and tends to be a popular spot. No restrictions at any time of year.

There are no dog waste bins on the beach itself — the nearest are in the car park.

Dog-friendly pubs and cafes near Mawgan Porth

The Merrymoor Inn

The only pub in Mawgan Porth, directly opposite the beach. In the same family since 1961, which is its own recommendation. Dogs welcome throughout. The menu runs from breakfast at 9.30am through to dinner — locally sourced food, daily specials, real ales from Cornish breweries. The garden and terrace overlook the beach and tend to fill up quickly on summer evenings. Worth arriving early if you want to sit outside. The Sunday carvery is a regular reason people make a specific trip.

The Falcon Inn, St Mawgan

A mile inland, a 16th-century inn in the village of St Mawgan. Dogs welcome. The kind of pub that makes a longer inland walk feel like the right decision.
