CORNISH HOLIDAYS

Dog Friendly Cottages in Hayle

Hayle sits at the eastern end of St Ives Bay on the north Cornish coast, with three miles of beach stretching west toward Godrevy Head and the estuary of the River Hayle running through the town. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site — the estuary and surrounding area are part of the Cornish Mining Landscape designation — and the RSPB manages the estuary as one of the most important wetland habitats in the south-west. Hayle was the first town in Cornwall to receive Walkers Are Welcome status, which reflects the footpath network around it. St Ives is six miles west. The North and South Cornish coasts are both within 15 minutes by car.

The beach rules here are more complex than almost anywhere else in Cornwall. The three-mile stretch is divided into sections with different names and different restrictions — getting this right before you arrive saves a frustrating walk. The guide below covers each section clearly.

The Lobster Pot is our featured cottage in Hayle — sitting on Hayle Wharf with harbour views from every floor, a private mooring and three miles of beach a short walk from the door.

Dog Freindly Walks

Three walks from Hayle

Godrevy Head via the coast path
4 miles return | 2 hours | Moderate

Head west from Hayle or Gwithian along the coast path toward Godrevy Head. The National Trust headland is open to dogs all year. Grey seals haul out on the rocks below the headland — visible from the clifftop, particularly in autumn and winter when numbers are higher. The Godrevy Beach Cafe in the National Trust car park welcomes dogs. A longer day continues the coast path east toward Portreath and Hell’s Mouth.

Hayle Estuary RSPB Reserve
Variable | Easy throughout

The RSPB manages the estuary as part of the Hayle Estuary Reserve, one of the most significant wetland sites in south-west England. The estuary is accessible from the town on foot and is particularly good for birdwatching — waders, wildfowl and migratory species passing through in autumn. Dogs on leads throughout. The estuary path is flat and easy underfoot, a good option in any weather.

Coast path to St Ives
5 miles one way | 2.5 hours | Moderate

Follow the coast path west from Hayle past Porthkidney Sands toward Carbis Bay and St Ives. One of the more rewarding sections of the South West Coast Path in west Cornwall, with St Ives Bay visible for most of the route. The St Ives Bay Line runs back to Hayle from St Ives station — dogs travel free on the train, making this a straightforward one-way walk. Note beach restrictions in St Ives in summer — Bamaluz Beach in the town is open to dogs all year if you need somewhere to finish.

Lelant and the estuary paths
2.5 miles | 1 hour | Easy

Drive to Lelant and follow the paths along the estuary edge toward Hayle. A flat, sheltered alternative to the coastal paths when the weather is coming in off the Atlantic. The St Ives Bay Line stops at Lelant — useful for extending the walk toward Carbis Bay or St Ives if legs allow.

What's open and when

The three-mile beach at Hayle runs from the estuary mouth in the east to Godrevy Head in the west, divided into five sections. Here is each one.

Mexico Towans — dogs all year, no restrictions

The central section of the beach, running between Black Cliffs to the east and a rocky outcrop before Gwithian to the west. This is the only section of the Hayle beach that has no seasonal restrictions at all. The boundaries are not clearly signed on the beach itself — which is genuinely frustrating and worth knowing before you go. The easiest approach is to park at Sandy Acres and walk down onto the beach, turning right toward Gwithian. The section opens up after about a mile. At the western end, a group of rocks crosses the beach at low tide — the gap between them is the landmark most dog walkers use as the boundary marker for Mexico Towans. Bring fresh water and bags — there are no dog waste bins or water stations on this section of the beach.

Hayle Towans (Harveys Towans) — restricted 1 July to 31 August, 10am-6pm

The eastern section of the beach, running from the estuary mouth to Black Cliffs. Outside those hours and months, dogs are welcome. The Cove Cafe at the Riviere Towans end is dog-friendly and a useful landmark for the eastern boundary of the restricted section

Gwithian Towans — restricted 1 July to 31 August, 10am-6pm

The section immediately west of Mexico Towans toward Gwithian village. The restriction applies on the beach to the left of the lifeguard hut and steps as you face the sea. Outside the restricted hours, dogs are welcome. The Sunset Surf cafe at Gwithian welcomes dogs and is a good stopping point.

Godrevy Beach — restricted 1 July to 31 August, 10am-6pm

At the far western end of the bay, owned by the National Trust, with the lighthouse visible offshore — the one Virginia Woolf had in mind for To the Lighthouse. The same July and August restriction applies. Outside those hours and months, one of the more dramatic beach settings in west Cornwall, with rock pools, strong Atlantic swell and seals visible on the rocks below the headland.

Porthkidney Sands — dogs all year, no restrictions

Across the estuary from Hayle, accessed by driving to Lelant and following the path through the West Cornwall Golf Course. Cannot be reached by crossing the estuary even at low tide. Open to dogs all year, quiet and largely unknown outside the local area — the St Ives Bay Line train stops at Lelant if you want to reach St Ives at the end of a walk without retracing your steps.
