Visting Fowey With Your Dog

Walks, Beaches & Places to Stay

Fowey sits on the west side of a deep estuary where the River Fowey meets the sea. Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it’s a lively little harbour town known for sailing, riverside walks and a relaxed pace of life. With ferries, beaches, coast paths and plenty of dog friendly cottages, Fowey makes an excellent base for a holiday in Cornwall with your dog.

One of the best ways to get a feel for Fowey is a walk along the Esplanade, lined with grand Edwardian and Victorian houses looking out across the water. The path takes you all the way to Readymoney Cove, a sheltered sandy beach overlooked by St Catherine’s Castle. It’s dog friendly outside the summer daytime restrictions (no dogs between 10am and 6pm in July and August), so ideal for early morning and evening strolls with the dog.

Across the harbour you’ll spot Polruan, a small village said to be older than Fowey, where the remains of a medieval blockhouse once protected the harbour. For a longer walk, catch the ferry to Bodinnick and follow the Hall Walk, a woodland path above the river leading to Polruan. The trail gives you wide estuary views, and you can return to Fowey by hopping on the ferry back across.

If you want to stretch your legs further, follow the South West Coast Path past St Catherine’s Castle towards Gribben Head. The path is dog friendly year-round, with highlights including Polridmouth Beach – a quiet, tucked-away spot thought to have inspired Daphne du Maurier while writing Rebecca.

On The Water & Around Town In Fowey

On the water

Life in Fowey centres around the river, and a dog friendly holiday here isn’t complete without spending time on the water. The simplest way is to take the ferry across to Polruan, weaving past sailing boats and fishing craft. Many ferries and boat tours welcome dogs, so it’s easy for them to come along for the ride.

If you’d like to explore further, guided boat trips leave from Town Quay, heading upriver past the China clay docks towards quieter creeks and villages such as Golant and Lerryn. Some operators allow dogs on board, but it’s worth checking ahead. For the adventurous, there’s the option of kayaking or paddleboarding – a peaceful way to spot river wildlife and enjoy the scenery from the water.

Around town

Fowey’s narrow streets are full of character, with medieval and Georgian buildings crowding close together. As you wander through, you’ll find independent shops selling gifts, books and local produce, alongside cafés and traditional pubs – many of which are dog friendly. Small lanes give you sudden glimpses of the estuary, and there are plenty of benches and quiet corners where you and the dog can pause and take in the view.

Historical Interest & Staying in Fowey

A writers haven

Fowey has inspired writers for generations. Kenneth Grahame, author of The Wind in the Willows, holidayed here, and the town was home to Daphne du Maurier, who lived in the area and based several of her novels – including Rebecca and The House on the Strand – around Fowey’s landscapes and creeks.

Today, the town’s calm pace and dramatic views still make it a rewarding place to spend time, whether you’re curling up in a holiday cottage or heading out with the dog to explore the estuary paths.

Staying in Fowey, Cornwall

There’s a wide choice of dog friendly holiday cottages in and around Fowey, from harbourside homes with views across the estuary to tucked-away retreats close to the coast path. Many offer enclosed gardens, direct access to walks, or easy reach of dog friendly pubs and beaches.

With luxury touches and a setting that combines harbour life with stunning countryside, it’s an excellent choice for a Cornish getaway with your dog.

Planning Your Trip

Driving through Fowey isn’t easy – the streets are narrow and one-way, and in summer they’re crowded with visitors. A better option is to park in the main car park at the top of town and take the shuttle bus down, or use Caffa Mill car park near the Bodinnick ferry, which offers a level walk into the centre. Both are handy if you’re staying with a dog, with easy access to ferries and footpaths.
