A first-floor apartment in the heart of Beer.

Three bedrooms, a south-facing balcony, the shingle beach a short walk away.

The Beer Cottage is a first-floor apartment just off Fore Street in the centre of Beer, the working fishing village on the Jurassic Coast. It sleeps six in three bedrooms with two bathrooms, has a south-facing balcony with views over the village to the sea, and sits a very short level walk from the shingle beach where you can buy fresh fish straight off the boats.

This is a village-life property rather than a remote retreat — Beer is busy in summer, with cafes, restaurants, art galleries, pubs and a wine bar all within minutes of the front door. The South West Coast Path passes through the village and winds west to Branscombe and Sidmouth, east toward Lyme Regis. Best suited to dogs that are happy on lead in a village setting and that don't need running space at the property itself — the apartment has a balcony rather than a garden.

Interior +

The entrance hall has seating, hanging space for coats, and storage for boots and wellies. Stairs lead to the first floor and the open-plan lounge-diner-kitchen with double-aspect windows and glass doors out to the south-facing balcony. The lounge has comfortable sofas, an extensive library of games, books, magazines and DVDs. The dining table seats six on benches, with a separate utility room and a WC nearby.

Stairs to the second floor lead to the bedrooms. The master bedroom is a king-size with en-suite bathroom (walk-in power shower, WC). Bedroom two is a twin convertible to king. Bedroom three has bunk beds and a well-stocked toy box. A large family bathroom with roll-top bath, walk-in power shower and WC sits between them. Each bedroom has a TV.

Exterior +

The south-facing balcony is the main outdoor space — open views over Beer rooftops to the sea, the right place to be for a sundowner. A handful of metal railings rather than enclosed glass; worth knowing if you have very small children or anxious dogs.

Parking is for two cars: one in a lockable garage (suitable for small cars only — the access lane is narrow), and one outside space. Worth measuring your car against the garage if you're driving something larger.

A short guide to Beer and the Jurassic Coast.

Beer is a working fishing village on the Jurassic Coast — the kind of place where boats still get pulled up the shingle each evening and the day's catch is sold from huts on the beach. The shingle beach itself has cafes, deck chairs, fishing trips in summer. Dogs are welcome on the beach outside the seasonal restriction zone — confirm dates before you arrive as rules can shift year to year.

The South West Coast Path passes through the village. Heading west, it's 4.5 miles to Branscombe (a famously photogenic stretch with a pub at the bottom), and 8.5 miles to Sidmouth. Heading east, 9.6 miles to Lyme Regis. The cliffs are dramatic — unmistakably Jurassic — and the walking is some of the best in Devon for unhurried days.

In the village itself, Fore Street has the bulk of the shops, restaurants, art galleries and pubs. Steepways down to the beach. The Anchor Inn on the harbour and the Dolphin Hotel both serve food.

For day trips, Sidmouth's regency seafront is fifteen minutes by car, and the donkey sanctuary nearby. Honiton — the antique capital of the South West — is a short drive inland.
