Quietly considered, beautifully kept.

Three bedrooms, a well-equipped kitchen, a woodburner that earns its keep, and a part of Cumbria that most visitors rush straight through.

The Cartmel Cottage sits on the edge of Grange-Over-Sands — a town with an Edwardian gentleness to it that suits a slower kind of break. The promenade, the sheltered bay, the ornamental gardens: none of it demands anything of you. Cartmel is ten minutes away. Holker Hall and Hampsfell are within comfortable reach. It's the kind of base the southern Lakes does quietly and well, without the crowds of the more celebrated towns to the north.

Inside, the cottage is thoughtfully and tastefully done — warm colours, considered touches, and a woodburner in the lounge that makes autumn evenings genuinely restorative. The kitchen is generous and well-equipped. The enclosed rear garden is a genuine asset for a dog. Three bedrooms on the first floor: a king, a double, and a bunk room. Worth noting there are a couple of steps up to them, and that Sunday arrivals are not permitted.

Interior +

The kitchen-diner runs along the back of the cottage — a marble island, a generous dining table, and a seven-ring electric range make it a kitchen worth cooking in. A utility room with washing machine and dishwasher sits neatly off to the side. The lounge is arranged around a woodburner, with a velvet blue sofa and Smart TV with Sky.

Three bedrooms upstairs: a king, a double, and a bunk room. Bathroom with bath and walk-in shower. Bed linen and towels included. A travel cot and highchair can be arranged. EV charging is available on site. Dogs are welcome throughout the ground floor.

Exterior +

The rear garden is enclosed on all sides — a raised lawn, patio, outdoor furniture, and a barbecue. Your dog can be off-lead without supervision, which is rarer than it should be. Parking for one car off-road at the property, a second space on the road nearby.

Phone signal in the area can be patchy. WiFi is provided. There is a Good Housekeeping Bond of £200 for this property.

A short guide to Grange-Over-Sands and the southern Lakes.

Grange-Over-Sands has a particular kind of quiet — Edwardian promenade, sheltered bay, ornamental gardens. It doesn't try to compete with the more dramatic parts of the Lakes, and that's its strength. If you're after the kind of break where the days arrange themselves rather than requiring management, this is the right part of the world for it.

Cartmel is ten minutes away and worth an unhurried morning. The twelfth-century priory is the centrepiece, but most people are drawn as much by the village itself — the sticky toffee pudding shop, the handful of good places to eat, and the racecourse, which runs from May to August. Dogs are welcome at the races on certain days, which makes for a particular kind of afternoon.

Holker Hall is a mile or two from Cartmel — a private estate with gardens that are genuinely worth the visit, and dogs on leads are welcome throughout the grounds. Combine it with a morning in the village and you have a full day with very little effort.

Hampsfell rises directly above Grange. There's a Victorian shelter at the top — built in 1846 by the vicar of Cartmel for travellers caught out by the weather — and on a clear day the view stretches across Morecambe Bay to the Isle of Man. The ascent from town takes around forty minutes. It's one of those walks that earns its reputation quietly.

Lake Windermere is within half an hour. The southern end of the Lakes is gentler than the central fells — better for dogs that want distance rather than elevation, and less visited than Keswick or Grasmere in the busier months.

Common questions.

Is The Cartmel Cottage dog-friendly? +

Yes — one well-behaved dog is welcome. The rear garden is enclosed, which is useful. Dogs are asked to stay downstairs rather than go upstairs to the bedrooms.

Why is this a personal favourite? +

We stayed here with our own dog and came back with a clear view of what makes it work: the location, the enclosed garden, and the woodburner. Cartmel, Holker Hall, and Hampsfell kept us occupied all week without once feeling pressured. It's the kind of place you leave wanting to return to — which is the only test that matters.

How many people does The Cartmel Cottage sleep? +

Six guests in three bedrooms — a king-size, a double, and a bunk room — plus a bathroom with bath and walk-in shower. Worth noting the property may suit four adults and two children better than six adults due to seating in the sitting room.

Are there walks from The Cartmel Cottage? +

Yes — Hampsfell is accessible directly from Grange-Over-Sands and is one of the better short walks in Cumbria. Cartmel, Holker Hall and the southern Lake District fells are all within easy reach by car.

Can we arrive on a Sunday? +

No — Sunday arrivals are not permitted at this property. Please plan to arrive on a different day.
