A Cornish bolthole with a woodburner and a hot tub under the stars.

Sleeps two. Cosy, unassuming, and very much the point.

The Looe Cottage is a compact, beautifully appointed bolthole in Polbathic, a quiet corner of south-east Cornwall between Looe and Torpoint. It sleeps two — one king-size bedroom upstairs with vaulted ceilings and exposed floorboards — with an open-plan lounge, kitchen and dining space below, built around a wood burner and underfloor heating. The hot tub is in the enclosed garden, which is at its most pleasant after dark when the stars cooperate.

The character of this part of Cornwall tends to get overlooked in favour of the north coast's drama and the far west's fame. South-east Cornwall is quieter — fishing villages rather than surf towns, rolling farmland meeting the sea, the South West Coast Path winding through it all. Looe, Polperro, Kingsand and Cawsand are the destinations within range, all within eleven miles. Bodmin Moor is twenty-one miles inland for a contrast.

Interior+

The open-plan lounge, kitchen and dining space at the heart of the cottage has slate flooring, beamed ceilings and the warm Cornish character that owners of holiday properties often say they're aiming for and rarely achieve. The wood burner — a working one, not decorative — sits alongside underfloor heating, so warmth isn't contingent on getting the fire going. The kitchen is well equipped for self-catering.

Upstairs, a charming king-size bedroom with exposed floorboards and a high vaulted ceiling. The bathroom features a roll-top bath and separate shower cubicle — a detail that counts when you've just come in from a long walk.

Exterior+

An enclosed cottage garden with patio, seasonal flowers and a lawn. The hot tub sits within it. Worth being clear: the garden is enclosed but not fully secure, so it's worth knowing this if you travel with a dog that's prone to bolting. Parking for three cars at the property.

A short guide to south-east Cornwall and the villages nearby.

South-east Cornwall tends to be underestimated. This corner of the county — between the Rame Peninsula and the Looe estuary — is quieter than anywhere on the north coast and less visited than west Cornwall. The fishing villages here are the working kind rather than the tourist kind, which is most of the appeal.

Looe is the nearest coastal town — twin towns linked by a bridge, with a fishing harbour, independent shops and places to eat without the crowds of Padstow or St Ives. Polperro, five miles from Looe, is arguably the more beautiful of the two — a narrow valley leading down to a harbour with working boats and a one-pub-per-inhabitant ratio. Worth the walk in from the car park at the top of the hill. Kingsand and Cawsand, on the Rame Peninsula, face Plymouth Sound and have a quieter, more local feel again.

Whitsand Bay — three miles of sandy beach between Torpoint and Looe — is the main beach option. Tregantle (7 miles) and Tregonhawke (9 miles) are the accessible sections. The South West Coast Path connects them, with walking that's genuinely rewarding rather than just scenic.

For a change of pace, Bodmin Moor is twenty-one miles inland — wide, dark, and a different kind of walking altogether.
