A grand country house with a sauna, a pizza oven and a vast lawn.

Seven bedrooms, five bathrooms, the Coast Path from the door.

The Bude House is a large, beautifully presented country house in the village of Poughill, on the outskirts of Bude in north Cornwall. It sleeps fifteen across seven bedrooms with five bathrooms — the kind of house that suits a large family gathering, a significant birthday, or a group of friends who haven't all been in the same place for years. The outdoor offering is exceptional: a sauna cabin, an outdoor pizza oven, a covered BBQ lodge for year-round alfresco dining, a sun terrace, a lawn badminton court, croquet, a children's swing, and a vast enclosed lawn with long-established trees. The South West Coast Path runs from the door.

Poughill village has a pub within walking distance. Bude is under two miles — sandy beaches, a tidal swimming pool on the seafront, independent shops, cafes and the kind of town that knows it has a good thing. Northcott Mouth beach is accessible on foot via the Coast Path. For wider exploring, Clovelly, Rock, Padstow, Bodmin Moor and the Eden Project are all comfortable day trips from here.

The entrance hall makes an immediate impression — the wood burner here sets the tone for the rest of the house. To the right, a generous dual-aspect lounge with original parquet flooring, comfortable seating and a Smart TV. Beyond, the dining room has garden-inspired décor and overlooks the garden with a door directly to the terrace outside — the right arrangement for large dinners. On the other side of the dining room, a secondary snug with a further Smart TV, Xbox and board games gives younger guests (or anyone who needs quieter company) their own space. The kitchen-breakfast room is impeccably fitted with an electric range oven and hob, microwave, dishwasher and an American-style fridge-freezer with ice maker. A utility room with an additional fridge-freezer, washing machine, tumble dryer and extra WC completes the ground floor. One bedroom sits on this level — a dual-aspect double overlooking the garden with an en-suite shower room.

The stairwell is light and generous. Upstairs, six further bedrooms arranged across the first floor. A king-size bedroom with a single day bed, accessible via a bunk bedroom (top bunk for children only) — the two rooms together work as a family suite. A further family bathroom with a freestanding roll-top bath, separate shower and WC. Two double bedrooms share a contemporary shower room nearby, plus an adjacent WC. A further double with an en-suite shower room. Finally, a spacious triple bedroom with three single beds beside a second bathroom — also with a freestanding roll-top bath, separate shower and WC.

Exterior+

The garden is the property's most exceptional feature. A large sun terrace with furniture is the main gathering point. A covered BBQ lodge enables outdoor dining throughout the year regardless of weather. An outdoor pizza oven for proper evenings. A sauna cabin. A child's swing. A lawn badminton court area. Room for croquet, boules, relay races and games that require space. The lawn itself is vast, enclosed, with long-established shrubs and trees and a pretty planted greenhouse with seating at one end.

The South West Coast Path starts from the door — Northcott Mouth beach is within walking distance, and Bude can be reached on foot either by road or via the public footpath. Ample private parking directly outside on the driveway.

A short guide to Poughill, Bude and the north Cornish coast.

Poughill is a quiet village half a mile north of Bude — a handful of thatched cottages, a church and the Preston Gate Inn within walking distance. The village feels genuinely unhurried, which is part of the point. Bude itself is two miles: a proper Cornish seaside town with a tidal swimming pool cut into the seafront rocks, independent shops, good coffee and several beaches.

Northcott Mouth beach is the closest — a beautiful rugged beach accessible on foot via the Coast Path, with a wetland bird sanctuary and nature reserve nearby. The waves here are Atlantic — worth knowing before you put the dogs in. Bude's beaches are more sheltered: Summerleaze and Crooklets both face the estuary and are popular with families and surfers.

The South West Coast Path runs directly from the property in both directions. Heading north, the cliffs open out toward Hartland Point. Heading south, the path tracks the dramatic Cornish Atlantic coast toward Tintagel.

For day trips: Clovelly, the privately-owned cobblestone fishing village, is 16 miles north. Padstow is around 30 miles south — worth it for a harbour lunch. The Eden Project is 45 miles. Bodmin Moor is 20 miles inland for the kind of walking that requires more elevation.
